The Role of Art

Judy Bear, Elder Sweetgrass First Nation
We need to be able to see visuals, not just only hear about things, but the visual aspect of something is very important. It's important that we have a reminder, how we need the land and its natural resources to be, to survive.

Trevor Herriot, Writer
There's a great movement of artists, writers and thinkers, right now, in our world, certainly here in Canada and in the United States, looking at that cultural question and that larger question of how we are disengaged from nature and how do we get re-connected again.

Richard Baschak, Photographer
I do art because I believe in that. I believe that there is this shared experience but I've had enough experiences to know that in that re-telling that there's some truth that's communicated.

Sharon Butala, Writer
A visual artist has to have feeling for his or her subject, in a sense, when an artist begins to paint or render a particular landscape, the artist has to become a part of that landscape.

Trevor Herriot, Writer
Artists and writers especially are always wanting to touch the land or be somehow connected to it and I think that's a symptom of our alienation from nature.

Glenn Sutter, Scientist
We need reminders of what could be better, we need artists to show us, to create visions of what life could be like if we start treating each other and the land better.

Courtney Milne, Photographer
Artists leading the way with their experiences and to do it without reservation without apology, that can bring people to a place where they say "me too."
